Oxford
Al-Salam (1.0)
Very friendly, very accommodating, excellent food, excellent service. Generous helpings, including complementary crudites (some would call it salad) while browsing the menu. Wide range of vegan dishes (17+ Hors D'Oeuvres, 5 Mains). Generally, if a dish looks vegan then it is, the exception being number 27 - Fatayer Sebanikh (Pastty stuff with spinach)

Cafe Nour (0.6)
Recently revamped and under new management. Extremely popular if you are watching a band or clubbing next door. Comprehensive but unexciting menu with all the usual favourites. Could do with more of everything in the wraps, but fast service and Lebanese food give it the stars.

Gardener's Arms (Vegetarian) (4.8)
Real vegan food.
Mar 2010 - we'd normally give this at least 4 stars, but a disappointing visit. The stars were for nostalgia purposes, and because at least they have declared vegan food on the menu. Monday evening, reasonably busy. Service without a smile, or even helpfulness. Chips were the over salted French Fries variety. Mushroom medley pie was burnt on top, served with vegetables that had probably been shown steam at some point. For our gluten free taster, we asked for extra chips instead of bun with the vegan burgers; the portion seemed smaller than a 'standard' one. Portions seemed smaller than previous visits. Please repay our faith in you and get better...
And now the beer - Brakspear (not vegan), Jennings (not Vegan), Riding (not clear where that was from - anyone help?). End of a disappointing beer week during which we established that Fullers isn't vegan, despite having been declared so several years ago. And remember, if it's not vegan, it's not vegetarian either, but if you like fish with your alcohol, drink up.

Karma Restaurant (2.2)
Jan 2010: Upmarket, only slightly more expensive than the 'standard' Indian, but excellent food, with some unusual options. Knew what vegan meant, and checked what could and couldn't be eaten. This restricted choice for starters, and as usual with Indian cuisine no sign of an edible dessert. However, quiet atmosphere, attentive staff.

Thai Orchid (0.8)
Great ambiance, enhanced by the conservatory dining area and the wooden carvings on the walls throughout. Good service. Only reason this doesn't get 4 stars is the lack of choice for vegans. Three starters: soup, pancake rolls or deep fried vegetables (including an intriguing 'parcel') with peanut and chili sauces. Two mains: sweet/sour or green curry. Rice (steamed or sticky) best we've had for ages. Thai beer served extremely cold was a good accompaniment. No issue with tap water (always ask anywhere you are, it's free...). No vegan desserts we could see. £30 meal for two.
Part of a local chain, but none the worse for that.

The Indian Room (2.9)
Reasonably priced Indian restaurant, with friendly staff. Quality of food better than average, could do with larger portions (!). What sets them apart is the willingness to adapt their menu for vegans, combining items on request and discussing and listening to what we want. Set in the old Exeter Hall pub, one side is converted into the restaurant, with the other doubling as a small, quiet bar and takeaway pickup.
And the sag dhal is so good it's helped them our respect.

The Vault and Gardens
(0.3)
Lovely place for outside eating.
Casual cafeteria-style eating
A lunch place not a dinner place.
They only serve about 4 things each day, two of which are vegetarian and I believe one of those is also always vegan. But it's healthy and really good food. And they always have a vegan dessert option too, a cake generally I think.
Thanks to one of our roving reporters for the writeup!

Uhuru's (0.0)
Oxford's wholefood store.
Uhuru's on the Cowley Road is an institution - the only real wholefood shop in Oxford. It is not exclusively veggie, but stocks most of the things even vegans want. Vegan cakes/snacks available over the counter. Holland & Barrett pale in comparison - and no bodybuilding supplements!
