And here's the Evidence!
With thanks to the NotMilkMan (best wishes for a speedy recovery from the eye op), here's a list that I'll add to from time to time. People often ask for 'proof' that a vegan/vegetarian diet is better than a meat-based one. Well, the first thing to say is that it is never (ever) possible to 'prove' anything, you can only disprove it. However, there is evidence, and conclusions from research gathering evidence gets published in peer-reviewed journals. So here's some conclusions.
"Scientific data suggest positive relationships between a vegetarian diet and reduced risk for several chronic degenerative diseases and conditions, including obesity, coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and some types of cancer." "Vegetarians often have lower mortality rates from several chronic degenerative diseases than do non vegetarians." British Medical Journal, 1996; 313
"Vegetarian diets low in fat or saturated fat have been used successfully as part of comprehensive health programs to reverse severe coronary artery disease." Journal of the American Medical Association 1995; 274
"Mortality from coronary artery disease is lower in vegetarians than in non vegetarians." British Medical Journal, 1994; 308
